At Sunvado, sustainability is at the heart of our business. We believe in the benefits of organic farming and it is our purpose to bring sustainable high quality organic certified avocado oil to the market. We are proud to work with thousands of organic farmers and to supply organic avocado oil to some of the world’s most sustainable and socially responsible brands.
Our organic avocado oil project will help to boost the income of the 32,000 smallholder farmers that grow our organic avocados. Before the start of our project, our farmers did not have access to an export market for their avocados. Most of the avocados were sold on the local market, at very low prices. Our avocado oil factory offers the farmers a better price for their avocados. In addition, we helped to set up the organic certification for our farmers, which gives them access to a Premium organic price. We expect our project to generate much needed income for our smallholder farmers.
Sunvado wants to go beyond the organic certification and help our farmers to adopt regenerative practices. These regenerative practices will help our farmers to improve their yields, while boosting soil health and protecting the local environment. We are setting up local nurseries, that hand out seedlings to farmers. The farmers can plant these seedlings to rejuvenate their plantations. In addition, we are distributing beehives. The bees help to pollinate the avocado flowers and produce a delicious honey. We are also using the avocado waste from our processing facility to produce compost. This compost is handed out to farmers, to help them fertilize their plantations. By adopting all these practices, we are aiming to produce our organic avocado oil in the most sustainable way possible.
At Sunvado, We want our organic avocado oil to create opportunities for our farmers, workers and their communities. To create optimal benefits for our farmers and worker, we rely on partnerships with different government institutions, as well as local and international NGO’s. Only by working together can we ensure that our organic avocado oil enables our farmers and workers to support and develop their communities.
Our organic avocado oil factory is located in the South of Ethiopia. Our processing facility is creating jobs in a region that offers limited employment opportunities. During the avocado season, our processing facility employs around 60 workers, half of which are women. In addition, our avocado sourcing operation employs nearly 200 extension workers, field staff , harvesters and collectors. At Sunvado, we care about providing a safe working environment and proper working conditions for our workers. For this reason, we are working with different certification programs, to help guarantee proper working conditions for all workers involved in the project.
